GENRE: Indie Pop • Alternative

Our Own House is a super fun and upbeat song talking about wanting to establish a relationship with a lover through the building of a metaphorical house. It has fantastic vocals, a seriously catchy melody, and an overall good vibe.

Misterwives is an indie pop band mostly based in New York. They have six members: Mandy Lee (Amanda Lee Duffy), William Hehir, Etienne Bowler, Marc Campbell, Jesse Blum, and Mike Murphy. They put out really fun and funky music, making sure to “stay true” to their indie vibes by having a very distinct style and tonal colour. They produce all of their own music.

"We built our own house, own house With our hands over our hearts And we swore, on that day That it'll never fall apart."

The lead singer, Mandy Lee, has an insane set of vocals. Her timbre is really unique, very indie-esque, and she encompasses a really large vocal range. The band, on top of Mandy lee, is comprised of a guitarist, bassist, percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, and a saxophonist. They make sure to use those particular instruments to reflect a warm, indie timbre in their music.

In this particular song, they have a very evident brass section that provide a counter-melody (1) in the chorus. Brass instruments tend to have a brighter sound colour, which lends the song a more upbeat, happy feel. The high-pitched electric guitar (which is quite faint in the background) also enhance this feeling. After the vocal intro in the beginning, all of the instruments use fills (in the case of drums) and fast rhythms to quicken the pace of the song, further contributing to the upbeat feeling.

This is a great song from a great band! Definitely something to check out!

Glossary:

(1) counter-melody: a secondary melody that goes alongside a melody. In this case, the main melody would be the vocals, and the secondary melody comes from the brass section.
